Scotrail Tour 1989 Day 1: 12th February 1989

Back in 1989 the fiancé, now wife, and I decided that we'd like to travel up to and around Scotland by train. This was before the days when she had Staff Travel Passes. While on the trip we'd stop off in Aviemore to see a friend of mine that I used to work with at Waterloo who now lived in Aviemore. And so the trip began ...

As we were not living together at this time it could not be too early a start. Meeting at Victoria we travelled on the Tube to Euston. We caught the direct train at 13:00
1S63 Euston to Glasgow Central 87024 'Lord Of The Isles'. (Class 87)
Leaving Euston on time the train was diverted via Bescot and then due to some Engineering works between Penrith to Carlisle it was delayed by just over an hour and we arrived into to Glasgow Central at 20:29 instead of 19:29.
Being it was so late we had not got anywhere booked for the night and ended up at Duncan's Hotel on Union Street. If it was still open I doubt I'd recommend it. The sheets were a sort of dirty off white (who am I kidding? They were grey), the whole place had a musty smell but as there was little else open this was our bed for the night (well the next two nights actually).
One we settled in we just got our heads down for the night.
