Scotrail Tour 1989 Day 2: 13th February 1989

Back in 1989 the fiancé, now wife, and I decided that we'd like to travel up to and around Scotland by train. This was before the days when she had Staff Travel Passes. While on the trip we'd stop off in Aviemore to see a friend of mine that I used to work with at Waterloo who now lived in Aviemore. And so the trip began ...

An early start was had and the intention was to travel up to Mallaig on the 08:10 and return later on the 14:25. On looking out the window and listening to the TV weather forecast we cut or losses and decided against it as neither of us fancied being out in the pouring rain and if the weather man was right we'd not even see much of the scenery due to the rain. A split second decision was made to instead go to Edinburgh as the forecast there was to be overcast but dry.*
Glasgow Queen Street was not a far walk and we missed the initial rain.

1O10 08:30 Glasgow Queen Street to Edinburgh 47702.

After spending time having an early lunch we discussed an alternative way back - via Aberdeen. Back to Waverley station for the train to Aberdeen.

1A47 12:45 Edinburgh to Aberdeen 47492.

A lovely journey as we avoided the rain, and en route managed to see a couple of class 26s at Dundee. We didn't have a lot of time at Aberdeen arriving at 15:25. Aberdeen is known as the Granite City and on the day it was. Grey and overcast beyond belief with a dull drizzle. We managed to find somewhere to eat before heading back to the station for a the train back to Glasgow.

1T46 Aberdeen to Glasgow Queen Street 47709.

We arrived back in to Glasgow at 19:52 which meant the light had gone and not a lot was seen. We had a B&B booked for the next stop so we planned the trip that evening.

* As a footnote to this ... it's now 2019 and we still haven't been up to Mallaig !!!
