Back in 1989 the fiancé, now wife, and I decided that we'd like to travel up to and around Scotland by train. This was before the days when she had Staff Travel Passes. While on the trip we'd stop off in Aviemore to see a friend of mine that I used to work with at Waterloo who now lived in Aviemore. And so the trip began ...
Today would be a long day for us. After bidding farewell to our friend we headed to the station and our first train of the day. Unable to tie up any locos (back in the day HSTs were not called locos yet today they are) we caught:
1E13 1051 Inverness to Kings Cross (Aviemore to Edinburgh) 43094, 43099.
At Edinburgh we went by taxi to the B&B we had booked in to - The Lairg Hotel. It was only a short walk from Haymarket station in Coates Gardens. We got back to the station in time to pick up
1E03 Aberdeen to Kings Cross (Haymarket to Edinburgh Waverley) 43076, 43066.
Having grabbed a few snacks for the next train we thought we'd like another couple of trips behind the lovely 47/7s so jumped on
1O85 16:30 Edinburgh to Glasgow Queen Street 47702.
It got us in to Queen Street in time to catch the
1O02 18:30 Glasgow Queen Street to Edinburgh 47703.
By now it was getting late and we decided to just go back to the hotel our train of choice was
1O93 20:00 Edinburgh to Glasgow Queen Street (Edinburgh to Haymarket) 47701.
A nice day all in all.
