Moorland, Steam and a Tractor: 7th September 2022

Firstly let me state that I love the NYMR but as much as I love it I did find this trip to be one that I found to be infuriating. When I went in to the ticket office at Whitby a day or so before our trip the rather uninterested chap was unable to give me the sort of info I was after. It should be basic to be able to answer a ticket query.
Basically the NYMR were running trains in and out of Whitby but there were only three different ticket types and they were specific to certain trains. Now while this works on the Intercity trains around the country on a heritage line it is simply daft! A family with young children would basically have just over 3 hours in Pickering to kill. As much as I like Pickering, 3 hours to kill is hard work, even more so with young kids (or grumpy teenagers). The only sections of the line you could use a Moorland Explorer ticket was between Grosmont and Pickering. The reason we decided to do the NYMR on the day was the Tour of Britian bike lot all over the place and we wanted to avoid driving. Due to the ticketing we ended up driving to Grosmont having a look at the Shed then drive to Goathland and then catch the train from there.

Grosmont:
A walk up to the sheds and a few photos as well as a trip to the upstrairs viewing gallery and model railways shop. My lad and I came away with a couple of items of course.
There is a newish model railway shop which, of course, we had to have a look in.
Back in the car and off to Goathland.

Goathland:
After parking up and the wife, daughter and son's partner had done their shops and photos it was fown for the 12:50 from Goathland to Pickering. Some purchases in the shop and a few snacks from the tea room that is situated in former goods shed (very good).
In puffed 80136 which is a BR Standard 4 Tank coupled to some delightful LNER teak finish carriages. We waited to set off for Pickering. And waited. And waited. We finally left 55 minutes late.

Pickering:
The new carriage shed at Pickering on the site of the old trout farm are brilliant and the NYMR have a real asset for themselves.
Once we had our walk around Pickering we headed back to get our train. As we got there on time our train, our train decided not to but did arrive 45 minutes late. This time 37403 in it's BR BLue revised large logo livery took us back to Goathland.
