Vikings, Romans, 180s: 10th October 2022

September was a total bust for me and railways (apart from the NYMR). Family things came first, so when SWMBO suggested a trip out on October 10th I was pretty interested. We decided on York as we've been there many times and due to her health issues if we decided to ditch it and go home early then it was no big deal.
Bold = Haulage, Red = Winner, All others are sightings.

Rather than get up at Stupid O'Clock we thought we'd have a slightly later than normal start.

We caught a bus down to Croydon and was at East Croydon in time to catch 9T00 Brighton to Bedford 700135 (non winner) up to St Pancras. This got us there WAY too early for our York train so it was into The Barrel Vault (Wetherspoons) for an unusual for us - 'sit down & take our time' Breakfast.
A casual walk over to Kings Cross to catch the Grand Central 1N90 Kings Cross to Sunderland. 180102 was a winner and cleared for 50 miles. I like travelling on cl.180s.

It was nice to see the cl.91s still turning their wheels between London and Leeds. Most of the trip it was the new cl. 80x units whizzing past. At Calton Jn there was a cl.68 working a driver training move as 0S37 0724 Longsight Car. M.D. to York and at the parcels siding a West Coast Railways cl.37 was stabled. As much as I love seeing the older traction I'm just not really a fan of that maroon livery.

A visit to Clifford's Tower to see it now it has had a bit of a makeover followed by a nice meal and pint of Mortimer's English Berry Cider on draught in The Cross Keys pub. One of the best pubs in York in my opinion. A few hours walking around the shops including the camera shop.

I wanted to get the the 17:03 Grand Central train back to London but the wife was feeling pretty tired. We ended up on 1E18 Edinburgh to Kings Cross formed of 801106, 800204. Both winners and both cleared for 75 miles.
Back in London it was another Thameslink train, 9S53 Cambridge to Brighton 700128 bck to East Croydon followed by 2J58 East Croydon to Lonfon Bridge 377701 to Selhurst
