It's been a railway I've wanted to do for many years. I went with my mate from work - two 50 somethings on a day out.
Bold = Haulage, Red = Winner, All others are sightings.
I started my day at Selhurst and headed to East Croydon to meet up with my mate.
2O09 Selhurst to East Croydon 377708 [0m 77ch] Non winner ❌
Once there we grabbed a bit of breakfast and then took our train.
9J14 East Croydon to Peterborough 700151 [89m 63ch] non winner ❌
It's a decent little walk from the station to the Nene Valley Railway. We had a look to see if we could track the removed bit of track between the current Nene Valley station and the spur line where it would have connected to the current line. It's quite easy to work out where it connected. We had a look in the secondhand book shop and around the station and its environs.
We both expected a steam loco to take us to Yarwell Junction but in thundered the amazing sight of a 'Peak' Class 45 45041. Peterborough Nene Valley to Yarwell junction [7m 29ch] ✅
A new line for me (and my mate).
We did get off at Wansford and enjoyed a good look around. Many photos taken
45041 took us back to Peterborough and we partook of a Wetherspoons before heading Home.
Overview:
One our way back we talked about the NVR and we both agreed. I guess our views may be a little contraversial.
The NVR is looking tired and a bit shabby. The rolling stock seemed a bit in need of a bit of TLC. The locos we could see looked good.
Wansford is a really nice station and with pretty good facilities. There isn't a lot at Yarwell Junction and due to the rather inclement weather we didn't get off.
Peterborough Nene Valley station has a good selection of traction and stock on display. It could do with a nice ticket office and waiting area.
I hope the NVR gets the investment it needs and I want people to visit it more.
