Charybdis is a sea monster in Greek mythology. Well I thought I'd start with a bit of fact/culture. yes? ... No ... Okay back to the railway stuff.
My Annual trip to God's own place to relax, Whitby, saw us there for a few days and while sitting in a pub eating our evening meal we decided on heading off to the NYMR the following day. We met in town and promptly grabbed a Greggs. While I like a Greggs as you can tell from other posts, there is something not quite right about one in Whitby!
Getting our tickets we wandered out on the the platforms to catch the train
1T11 Whitby to Goathland 5428 'Eric Treacy' [9m 51ch]
We decided against getting off at Grosmont on this occasion and instead alighting at Goathland. The loco is a LMS Class 5 aka Black Five that is named after Bishop Eric Treacy (2 June 1907 – 13 May 1978) who was a ardent Railway Photographer.
Goathland has featured in many films and TV shows in the past. Most famously it was Hogsmeade in the Harry Potter films and Aidensfield in the TV series Heartbeat. It is a walk from the station that is uphill and it takes about 15 minutes at least to get to the shops. Obviously it's very much Heartbeat orientated.
The small NYMR shop at the station does contain a fair bit of Harry Potter merchandise. One of the best view points for photographing the trains if from the footbridge on the station. On the Pickering bound trains side of the station there is a gate that leads you up on to the moors. From there is is possible to get good photos although I have not tried this myself. Our next train was at 12:55.
Goathland to Pickering 44806 [14m 31ch]
44806 is also a Stanier Black Five. The line from Goathland head south passing the stations of Newtondale Halt (a request stop) and Levisham. On the approach to Pickering they hav a huge new carriage shed on the site of the old trout farms.
After a walking lunch we decided to catch the train back to Whitby.
1T18 Pickering to Whitby 31128 'Charybdis' [24m 05ch].
The loco is almost resident on the NYMR now.
All in all a good day.
