Breathless in Bath: 7th February 2026

Bold = Haulage, Red = Winner for haulage
The last time I was in Bath itself was over 30 years ago. Back then we were there for a few hours both before and after taking a bus to Glastonbury. No not for the festival! My Mum was very in to her Arthurian Legends so we visited the Abbey there.
This time we wanted to make a good day of it so a reasonably early start was made.
9T02 East Croydon to Farringdon 700142 [12m aach].
A swift change over to the Elizabeth line down the long escalator.
9Y54 Farringdon to Paddington 345053 [3m 44ch].
I've said it before and I'll say it again - The Elizabeth line is so much easier to get to Paddington than via the underground. I always felt the Circle line had big gaps that caused unnecessary stress to a trip. At Paddington we (the wife, daughter and I) grabbed some food and drinks for the trip then sought out our train. 1C06 Paddington to Bath Spa 800303 [106m 66ch].
A nice quiet trip down and alighted the train and it was on time. There is the old lift shaft still atthe station on the Down side and is locked off. The waiting room has some nice old railwayania in the waiting room. We used the Exit on the Down side but had to go through the tunnel to get to the main town side of the railway. We did a lot of walking aroun the city and I hadn't noticed before how 'hilly' it was. I had had a cold and flu type bug for a few weeks so I put down the coughing and breathlessness to that. We ate in nandos, gasped at the cost of getting in to the Roman Baths and had a drink in the 'Spoons (well it'd be rude not to).
The wife and daughter managed to go in to as many shops as they could. Oh how fun that was - NOT!
All too soon we decided to head back to the station and homewards.
1A28 Bath Spa to Paddington 800308 [106m 66ch].
A pretty uneventful trip was needed as I sat and felt exhausted. At Paddington a slow walk to the "lizzie" line.
9W54 Paddington to Farringdon 345031 [3m 44ch].
9T55 Farringdon to East Croydon 700143 [12m 11ch].
2J58 East Croydon to Selhurst 377314, 377315 [0m 77ch].

Update: May 2026
Here's the aftermath. I ended up getting a doctor's appointment and getting a chest X-Ray. Still ill. Then an ECG and a bloodtest on the 19th of February at 14:00. At 18:05 (I know th time as we had just sat down to eat) I got a call from the GP and told the go urgently to hospital. Apparently I had been living with pulmonary embolism and was in danger of dying! Well two nights in hospital and now on blood thinners I am getting better. It's taking time though.
