Downham and Delays 18th July 2026

With a new station opening recently and one I've not visited as yet I decided that as the wife and daughter were out I'd take a trip out and visit them also one I have not been to for a few years.
A reasonable start for me as I headed to Selhurst for the first train of the day. 2O09 Selhurst to East Croydon 377705 non winner [0m 77ch]
Then crossing platforms I managed to catch the next Thameslink northbound. 9R08 East Croydon to St Pancras International 700121 non winner [13m 40ch].
So far so good, I crossed over to Kings Cross and headed for the newest station on the network - Cambridge South which opened on June 28th, 2026.
1T10 Kings Cross to Cambridge South 379004, 379009 winner [56m 32ch]
Somehow the train managed to pick up 3 minute delay by the time it arrived at Cambridge South. The new station is pretty much a copy of the usual new stations built now. At the London end of the platform there is a footbridge linking three of the platforms. Just quite why it doesn't connect to platform 1 doesn't seem sensible. The main halls of the station on both the East and West side are large and spacious with curved staircases. Cambridge South is the first fully GBR branded station. I do like the curved entrance to the station on the east side. Other than the "drop off" point there is no car park or other integrated transport links. My train to my next new station was cancelled but there was GTR service to Cambridge so I took that.

2C08 Cambridge South to Cambridge 700009 non winner [1m 40ch]
Once at Cambridge I waited on my next move to Cambridge North.
1T14 Cambridge to Cambridge North 379005, 379008 winners [2m 23ch]
Cambridge North was opened 21st May 2017 I had not visited it until this trip. It isn't as nice as the new Cambridge South station and only has 3 platforms. Platform 1 is the London bound platform, platform 2 is teh through platform heading North towards Ely. Platform 3 is the terminating platform which I mostly observed Greater Anglia use on my visit. There isn't a lot of cover there so, as it was cold, I decided to just travel back to Cambridge before heading to Ely station.
1T19 Cambridge North to Cambridge 387103, 387104 non winners [2m 23ch]

At Cambridge I decided to head to Ely on a slightly earlier service, basically to be out of the cold. I've travelled through platform 1 & 2 a few times before but this trained arrived and terminated on platform 3 - nice.
1T16 Cambridge to Ely 379024,379028 one winner [14m 56ch]
I took a few photos here and there whilst waiting for the 11:06. By 11:15 I was watching Trasky at 1T18 arrived late into Cambridge and them after a long while disappeared. A chat with the really great staff member revealed that and it was cancelled but they had put in VSTP to run to Kings Lynn.
1G18 Ely to Downham Market 379004, 379009 non winners [15m 58ch] it was also 39 minute late!

Downham Market station is like a time capsule that is set for the era of Network Southeast. and for me having worked as part of NSE it was wonderful to see.
Off I want into town to The Whalebone Wetherspoons. Another one ticked off. A burger and a couple of pints of cider later I headed back to the station to take a few more photographs before I headed back to London.
1T37 Downham Market to Kings Cross 379004, 379009 non winners [91m 00ch]
Just after Cambridge I nodded off until Hitchin. That's not good for me ....
9S39 St Pancras International to East Croydon 700126 non winner [13m 40ch].
And the at Croydon ...
2J46 East Croydon to Selhurst 377314, 377321 non winners [0m 77ch].
