31 miles and 74 chains from Ipswich lies the station of Halesworth on the East Suffolk Line. It is now a minor and unstaffed station with two platforms. When the station was rebuilt on its present location it straddled a road. This lead to the creation of the stations claim to fame. The Halesworth Moving Platforms. An ingenious idea. I've not gone in to details about it as the linked website explains it all far better than I can.
The narrow (3ft) gaauge railway line to Southwold started here and ran between 1879 until closure in 1929. The Southwold Railway ran for over 8 miles with three intermediate stations (Wenhaston, Blythburgh and Walberswick) to the small coastal town of Southwold. The line had just five designated locomotives and all appear to have been screapped. There have been an attempt to bring the railway back to life but there does seem to be quite some serious opposition to this. It's a shame as this could bring some tourists and therefore money to the town.
Either way Halesworth station is quite a gem of a station.
