While we were sat in the hotel and were discussing what to do next, I mentioned that I had briefly visited Sheringham and it was an old fashioned seaside town. I also mentioned the North Norfolk Railway. In less then 5 minutes a plan had been formed.
A decent timed start to the day saw us have breakfast and be at Norwich station for about 09:15. A couple of bottles of drinks were purchased and then it was time for the train to Sheringham

The line to Sheringham is nice. Things to look out for are
Sheringham station is a small one platform affair. The current station opened in 1967 following the Beeching Report and was a simple wooden platform. It was rebuilt in 2019 to allow the use of the new Stadler class 755 units. The National Rail and North Norfolk rail are linked via track that cross Station Road. This allows visiting locomotives to access the heritage line easily.
The North Norfolk Railway, also known as the Poppy Line, was begun after the Beeching Axe. The line is 5 miles 20 chains between Sheringham and Holt stations. It's a pleasant ride in both directions. The line was festooned with Poppy's along it's length which is very nice.
Our outward train From Sheringham was a mix of a Driving car (M51188) of a Class 101 first generations DMU and a driving car (E79263) from a Metro Cammell "Lightweight" DMU. Travelling on the units took me back to my childhood when we had family Holidays in Whitby. Occasionally we would walk to Ruswarp and catch the train back in to Whitby. This were the old Class 101 DMUs that trundled up and down the Esk Valley line.
Sheringham to Holt E79263, M51188 winners [5m 20ch].
Holt station is nice. We took a walk through the car park to the 1930s Railway Cottage.
Just beyond the end of the tracks at Holt stands the Railway Cottage, open to explore on most days.We had a lovely chat with the people in there and there is a lovely book for sale at a bargain price of £2.00. Of course one was purchased. Back at Holt station we bought an ice cream and sat relaxed in the quiet. It was only punctured by the occasional tweeting of birds high up in the trees. Soon the train arrived to take us back to Sheringham so we could have some lunch.
After the First World War a surplus of carriages provided cheap housing for many families, though not all worked on the railways as the name suggests! Today, the cottage is set out to demonstrate family life during the 1930s.
The Railway Cottage is open on most days throughout our main season, April – October.
At Sheringham and a brief look in the shop we needed lunch. Walking down the high street we stopped at 'The Robin Hood pub. To be honest the staff were nice but the fish and chips was in all honesty poor. I think we'd look elsewhere if we go again.
While we were eating the wife asked if I had enough of my meds with me (yes I am old now and I need meds!) which I confirmed I did. She suddenly said >br />
"Well we could stay a night at Great Yarmouth. There are rooms available at the The Troll Cart which is a Wetherspoons hotel. We'd planned on staying there a while ago but due to her health issues we couldn't. Literally there and then we decided to stay one more night away.
Once we had had our walk around Sheringham we headed up to the station for a train back to Norwich.

At Noerwich we changed trains and grabbed a couple of bottles of water as it was really hot.

We do like Great Yarmouth. brings back memories for us of our first holiday together and for the wife it brings back memories of her childhood holidays.
The Troll Cart is a really good hotel and worth a stay.
